Project Proposal

Title: Breast Health Specialist (BHS) Curriculum and Training Model

Type Details: The goal of this project is the creation of instructional curricula and materials for breast health specialists (BHS), and verification of the usefulness of these educational tools during the professional course. The project is designated for mid level medical personnel to gain knowledge in breast cancer screening, population surveying, high risk group identification as well as Clinical Breast Examination (CBE) skills and Breast Self Examination (BSE) teaching abilities. The final goal of the program is to introduce these specialists into their local community cancer prevention programs where they will evaluate high risk groups, conduct surveys and teach CBE to local nurses. Additionally their BSE teaching skills will be transferred either directly to indigenous women in their communities or indirectly via the nurses they train. Their breast health expertise may also be transferred to groups of women involved in community prevention programs and/or survivor support groups. The course, comprising 24 hours of theory and 20 hours of practical exercises, should provide the opportunity to adjust the training material prior to its countrywide introduction. The courses theoretical part will consist of breast anatomy and pathology, risk factors, early diagnosis, treatment and prevention as well as basics in psychology and dealing with breast cancer patient. The practical aspect will include examination techniques, differentiation between normal anatomy and pathology, evaluation of different types of lumps and identification of their characteristic traits both on the silicon breast models as well as through the peer examinations. The skills and knowledge of the trainees will be confirmed during a practical and theoretical examination. Those who pass the exam will receive a breast health specialist certificate approved by the Board of Nursing.
